The Story of Russia eBook R Robert Van Bergen
Covering more than 900 years in the span of 221 pages isn't conducive to in-depth analysis. That said, it does a nice job of providing a chronology of the various rulers and some of the complexities of national relations in that part of the world. I've been reading a variety of texts about Russian history and this book provided a convenient way of placing them in relation to each other and revealing the gaps that remain. An easy read.Product details

The Story of Russia eBook R Robert Van Bergen Reviews
This book gave a very chronologically arranged story of how Russia evolved through all of their wars beginning with small area battles, the Mongol invasion, warring against the Turks, Poland, et al.; then information about the differing rulers, autocrats, the Romanovs, and a good understanding of the formation of the USSR and why Russia behaves the way it does in current times.
kinda boring
Interesting view of Russia. Very non-judgmental. Extremely old book though as it ends before WWI.
Boring but mildly informative. Too many flowery terms used in places that demanded direct and clear wording to ensure the context is not lost. Good information but needed more background rather than just straight facts.
A dizzying array of facts, welded into a cohesive whole that entirely changed my appreciation for the Russian bear's psyche.

There were limitations to scholarship when Bergen wrote. No internet, limited access to documentation and access to only to the libraries one can visit. Given the time that Bergen was writing he did a wonderful job with this book and with his clear writing style it is a wonderful read.
